Logotherapy – Meaning centered counseling

There is a saying that I love and find very powerful by James Allen,

“Circumstances don’t make a man, they reveal him.”

This is profound. Who are we when life throws challenges at us? How do we cope with the difficulties and tragedies that come our way?

Logotherapy is a positive healing approach which encourages the understanding that every person’s life has purpose, MEANING and direction. Dr. Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) author of Man’s Search for Meaning , a psychiatrist and neurologist who lived in Vienna both before and after WWII was the founder of Logotherapy. Frankl’s work before, and then during the Holocaust as an inmate in the concentration camps was to help people find meaning in their lives, despite circumstances. Frankl quotes Nietzsche who said: “He who has a WHY to live for can bear almost any HOW.” Logos = meaning, hence logotherapy = meaning therapy. Logotherapy is based on three primary principles:

  • Life is unconditionally meaningful. There is no situation where meaning cannot be found.
  • We have the freedom to make meaningful choices in life.
  • Our strongest motivation is the desire for our life to have meaning and purpose.

Professional Logotherapy counselingThere is another anonymous saying that I find so meaningful, “We can’t be in control of which way the wind will blow; but we can be in control of what we do with the wind in our sails.” Every day we have opportunities to find meaning in whatever is going on in our lives despite whether they are good or bad. Logotherapy encourages and guides people to find this meaning and to do something to make that potential for meaning real. Logotherapy doesn’t ask “why” things happen, but helps and encourages one to find answers to “what now”. Frankl says, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Through Logotherapy we seek to find the action that life has called upon us to take. Frankl is famous for having said, “It is not what we expect from life that is important, but what life expects from us that is important.” For the big issues and the small issues in life that you just can’t seem to get your head around and understand or find meaning, Logotherapy can help you along this journey. Logotherapy is not about long term, drawn out sessions, it is designed to help you find meaning and purpose and help put you on track to attaining it.
